THE NEED Sin is taking its toll. America is full of wounded hurting people. Christian counselors are literally buried under the load. Many are burned out. But at the time of greatest need, many believers seem content to occupy a pew and pay professional church staffs or TV based ministries to minister in their behalf. Perhaps they feel satisfied that a contribution of money relieves them of any obligation to share Christ to those only they can reach..
But what if the Great Commission was given to individuals not organizations? Wouldn't that require each one of us to minister to those in our own personal "world?" Wouldn't that put us all in our own ministries? Think about it. If each one of us reached our own "worlds" wouldn't that reach the entire "world" more efficiently? This is not to depreciate the excellent work of organizations or those who rightly fund their work. I am simply asking you think in terms of having your own ministry.
A MINISTRY OF YOUR OWN I would encourage you to launch your own ministry and allow us to help. We can help you start a ministry that employs the same methods Jesus used. He reached folks by solving problems, meeting needs and offering help? It's the pattern we follow and so can you. In fact there are some verses in Peter that talk about always being ready to give an answer concerning the hope that is within us to anyone who may ask or at a time of opportunity. While the Great Commission talks about going to where people are, this is about being ready when they come to you. This is a method anyone can use. People with problems always seek out the Christian in their midst. When this happens, it is your opportunity to minister if you are ready with an answer.
First of all, be a compassionate listener. Second, be a compassionate responder. Let them know that you will pray with them. Then share as God leads. (Reading my website will help with this) Third, mention The Counseling Center's web site as needed. Tell them that it offers free, helpful information that they can read or download. As they read information addressing their problem, they are introduced to Christ and you are responsible.
Christians in a number of countries are doing this. Some have even emailed me for permission to print business cards with the web address on it. They hand these to people expressing a need. Some even disburse them randomly. You have my permission to do this as well. www.counselingcenter.homestead.com is here to help you minister to your world. The Apostle Paul speaking on the topic of how Christians work together said, some preach, some water but it's God who gives the increase.
WHERE TO GET TRAINING FOR YOUR COUNSELING MINISTRY In the spirit of the last sentence, may I introduce a valued co-worker, Dr. Greg Burts and his ministry, www.centerforbiblicalcounseling.org. This is the perfect resource to equip you for a more effective counseling ministry.
A PERSONAL WORD The Counseling Center is on the front lines. It's like a slugfest everyday as we try to help hurting people with problems. Each e-mail represents someone's serious situation. I have to pray and spend whatever time it takes to make a helpful reply. So put me on your prayer list. Pray that God will give me an inciteful response to each situation.
Finally, may I restate the goals of this ministry. #1 To directly help hurting people through the internet and via email. #2. To help others get involved in their own ministry making available our materials and website as a resource. Finally, sometime soon, I would like to bring a seminar to your town, teaching on the subject of personal ministry. It would be a wonderful time of meeting my friends and perhaps enlisting even more believers as we work together to reach this generation for Christ.
